(Kevin Kaiser | Travel Beat Magazine)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Set out across the sound, around sandbars and marshlands, for a laid-back island time.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdot.gov\/ferry\/\">North Carolina ferry system<\/a> is extensive and aims to efficiently connect its communities with low- or no-cost transportation across great stretches of brackish water.<\/p>\n<p>As you embark on the, say 2 hours and 40 minute trip from Swan Creek to Ocracoke, you\u2019ll float past osprey, pelicans and sea gulls hanging out in marshlands and tide pools. (Cheryl Welch | Travel Beat Magazine)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hang out in your car (with the windows and doors open to catch the breeze\u2014just make sure not to kill your battery) or roam around the ferry decks to get the best views of dolphins splashing in the surf or nearby barrier islands.<\/p>\n<p>When you arrive in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocracokevillage.com\/\">Ocracoke<\/a>, pick up a map of the island and take a drive. (Cheryl Welch | Travel Beat Magazine)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s also home to the second oldest operating lighthouse in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Move on up the chain of islands by hopping on a free ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras. On Hatteras, you\u2019ll find shops, fishing marinas, the fantastic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/caha\/planyourvisit\/chls.htm\">Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Station<\/a> and more beaches.<\/p>\n<p>You can really spread out on these southern stretches of beach as most of the resorts and crowds gather up toward Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to stop in at the black-and-white-candy-cane-striped Hatteras lighthouse in the evening. Nearby Jeannette\u2019s Pier offers a $2 walk out into the ocean. Here, you\u2019ll find the dunes where the Ohio-born boys launched their gliders to the delight of onlookers and supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Keep heading north, and you\u2019ll come to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.currituckbeachlight.com\/\">Carrituck lighthouse<\/a>, a red-brick masterpiece that\u2019s worth the out-of-the-way detour before you head off the islands by bridge to the mainland.<\/p>\n<p>With you, you\u2019ll take a piece of island serenity.<\/p>\n<p>(NOTE: The Outer Banks are yours to explore on any budget and on any time scale. We\u2019d recommend at least three days in the islands themselves to do it right, but that\u2019s just a sampling of the Outer Banks.
